Some people hate it, some people like it and a lot of people are addicted to it. Social networking sites such as Facebook.com are extremely popular these days. If you happen to have an iPhone you can download a myriad of social networking applications. Using Looped, you can find where your friends are located just by adding their phone number into the app. and hitting the button. A little scary actually but very cool none the less.
We at Hyperthink happen to all be very happily hitched so we are not on the popular singles networking sites but sites like match.com and eharmony.com are multi-million dollar industries and it is fascinating to watch the way we use to keep up with friends or make new ones morph into this new form of networking.
The question is are the SN sites a good thing? Depends on your perspective. I have friends who really don't want someone who they happen to say hello to one day in college 15 years ago to ask them to be their friend on Facebook. Makes for an awkward situation when you reject their request. After all you weren't ever really friends. On the flip side it really is great to connect to a true friend whom you haven't heard from in years and to see their family pics and get to catch up and reminisce on the past.
The days of mailing friends a card or calling them on the phone at a number they have had for years is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Many would argue that staying in touch has become rather impersonal and in some ways that is very true. The positive side is that at least we are staying in touch and making new relationships and if technology helps do that we say GO FOR IT! Enjoy it but don't let it take you away from your most important relationships that you have right in front of you.
